A former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Chubudom Nwuche yesterday condemned the killing of a student at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) during the students’ protest against the “no fee, no examination” policy.
In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the former lawmaker described the incident as sad and unfortunate.
He commiserated with the family of the student and the Students’ Union Government (SUG).
The statement said: “Our children and our youths are our future and should be well protected as they are invaluable assets. Even when they err, we must exhibit restraint and ensure the use of minimum force while correcting them.”
Nwuche regretted that the slain student was a union leader, who obviously was endowed with leadership skills and qualities and whose parents must have expended a lot of resources on him before got that far in the institution.
“To have him cut down at the prime of his youth is most tragic. I call for a thorough investigation into the remote and immediate circumstances that led to this sad incident with a view to fishing out those responsible for appropriate sanctions,” he said.
